Tips For Eating More Sustainably

When it comes to food products in the U.S., our practices can be surprisingly inefficient, unsustainable, and overall bad for the environment. Between packaging, manufacturing processes, and other wasteful practices, there’s a lot of room for improvement when it comes to sustainable eating. In today’s blog at Briardale, we’re talking all about things you can do to eat and live more sustainably.

Don’t Purchase Out-of-Season

As tempting as it is to purchase things out-of-season, this practice can be harmful to the environment. If you’re in California, and you’re buying strawberries in winter, odds are you’re fine. Certain climates can handle out-of-season crops well. However, it’s important to consider your current location, paired with where the produce is being imported from before you buy anything out-of-season.

Buy Fewer Packaged Products

It’s difficult to avoid packaged produce at large, chain grocery stores. These days, many products come in plastic containers. However, some produce options are packaged minimally, and it’s important to choose these while shopping. It may also be tempting to use single-use plastic bags for produce and meat at grocery stores, but avoid doing this as much as possible, too.

Buy Humanely-Raised Meat

Large dairy and meat farms will often leave equally large carbon footprints. Briardale Ostrich Farm is a local meat farm that is committed to limiting our carbon footprint, and we hope that you will join us in our movement. Be sure to research local farms before you commit to purchasing with them. Also, try to stick to buying pasture-raised meat.

Grow Food At Home

Despite popular belief, it’s rather easy to begin your own little farm at home. Even apartment patios can successfully grow foods like tomatoes, limiting the need to purchase them from the store. Start small, with plants like herbs, and then see how much you can grow at home! You might even surprise yourself and pick up a fun new hobby.

Sustainable eating doesn’t need to be difficult. However, Briardale Ostrich Farm understands the striking disconnect between consumers and corporations. The more you know, the more you can help. Of course, you likely won’t change all your habits overnight, and that’s fine! The goal is sustainability, after all.
